Activity Breakdown

Finding the cheaper version of a task — stop, shorten, change, delegate or leave — before the day needs it.

A keep-close version. Read it here, or screenshot this page to have it on your phone — print and PDF copies will appear once final files are attached.

Take one recurring task and break it into its actual parts — including the parts nobody counts. Then choose the version you're doing before you start, so stopping is a decision you made while rested rather than a collapse you have to explain.

One task, written plainly

The task

e.g. Shower and get dressed

Before

Everything that has to happen before the task itself begins.

The 'before' steps

e.g. Walking to the bathroom, undressing, waiting for the water to warm

During

The 'during' steps

e.g. Standing through the shower, washing hair, drying off

After

The 'after' steps

e.g. Dressing, hanging the towel, brushing hair, recovering

Hidden demands

The parts that rarely make the list but still get paid for.

  • Deciding where to startThe weighing-up before the doing
  • The trips between roomsEach one is its own exertion
  • Sensory input — water, light, noise
  • Holding the plan in mind while doing it
  • The recovery afterwards, quietly subtracted from the evening

Which parts are optional?

The towel can stay unhookedHair can air-dryOnly the essentials need doing todayThe 'after' can happen lying downSome steps can move to tomorrowNone today — and that's allowed

Could anything be delegated?

Someone could bring things to meSomeone could handle the 'after'Someone could do the task altogetherNot today — noting it is still useful

The smaller version, in one line

Written here, in advance — so the version is chosen rather than discovered mid-task.

My version for today

e.g. Basin wash at the sink, clothes ready on the counter, hair under the tap

There are more options than 'do it' or 'don't'. A smaller version still counts as a different version, not a failed one.
