Decision-Making With Limited Capacity

Decide Now / Later / Not Me

Giving every decision a destination, so the queue stops being a demand of its own.

A keep-close version. Read it here, or screenshot this page to have it on your phone — print and PDF copies will appear once final files are attached.

Every incoming decision has four honest destinations. This is the card version — a way to file the day's decisions quickly, so nothing keeps running in the background as an open loop.

What's on my mind right now

Two or three is plenty — the ones actually circling.

  • A message that needs answering
  • A plan that needs confirming or shrinking
  • A form or piece of admin
  • A purchase, or a 'shall I?'
  • Something someone is waiting on me about

The one that's costing the most

Name it plainly

e.g. The birthday present — I keep re-opening the same search

Its destination

Now — it's genuinely small, and closing it is cheaper than carrying itLater, with a date — the thinking happens once, not dailyNot at all — dropped, on purposeNot me — delegated with one sentence

The sentence that files it

Said to yourself, or to whoever's waiting — one line closes the loop.

My line

e.g. I'll decide by Friday and let you know — you'll have your answer then.

'I've decided not to decide about this yet' is a complete sentence and a real decision. Tomorrow is a real answer.
