Role-to-Value

Finding what a lost role was really made of, so it can survive in a form capacity allows.

A keep-close version. Read it here, or screenshot this page to have it on your phone — print and PDF copies will appear once final files are attached.

Take one lost role and ask what it actually gave — to you, and to the people around you. The answer is almost always a value, not a task list. And values have smaller forms.

The role

The role that's gone or changed

e.g. The one who hosted every occasion

What it gave you

The real gift, to you

e.g. Feeling useful; the pleasure of feeding people; being needed

What it gave others

The real gift, to them

e.g. A warm door; a place to gather; feeling looked after

The value underneath

Care — it was never about the cookingBelonging — making a place for peopleGenerosity — giving without keeping scoreCraft or competence — doing it wellBeing the calm centreKeeping people connected

The smaller form

The value survives — delivered differently, at a size that fits.

My version, at today's scale

e.g. Hosting: I choose the music and the guest list, someone else cooks — the door is still warm

You are not made a former person by losing the context — only the context changed. The value was never located in the task; that's why it can move.
