Scripts I Want Ready

Reusable messages for the situations that repeat — written once, used many times.

A keep-close version. Read it here, or screenshot this page to have it on your phone — print and PDF copies will appear once final files are attached.

The situations that come round again don't deserve a fresh composition each time. Pick your recurring situations, build your messages from ready parts, and keep them where they can be sent in seconds.

Build: the plan-change message

One apology or none, one clear statement, one alternative if there is one.

The opener

  • “I need to move our plans —”
  • “I have to shorten today —”
  • “I can't make tomorrow work after all —”

The reason-sized statement

  • “my body isn't going to manage it.”
  • “I'm at my limit for today.”
  • “I'm in a difficult stretch and can't promise things in advance.”

The alternative (if there is one)

  • “Can we pick another day?”
  • “I'll come for the first hour instead.”
  • “I'll be in touch when I can manage it properly.”
  • “There's no alternative this time — and I'm sorry.”

Build: the short no

The decline

  • “Thank you for thinking of me. I can't make it this time —”
  • “Not this one —”
  • “I can't, but thank you.”

The door left open (if you want it open)

  • “but I'd like to be invited again.”
  • “but please keep asking.”
  • “and that's all it is — nothing complicated.”

Where these will live

Somewhere they can be sent from without composing anything.

Their home

e.g. Phone notes — one note called 'ready messages'

Long apologies teach people that cancellations are crises requiring management. One clear message keeps the friendship and the capacity both.
