Task Step Reducer
Having the floor version of a task decided in advance, so a bad day doesn't require inventing one.
A keep-close version. Read it here, or screenshot this page to have it on your phone — print and PDF copies will appear once final files are attached.
For any one task: list its steps, mark which can go, move or shrink — then write the floor version down before the day you need it. A routine that collapses when capacity drops was always too long; a shortened one keeps its place in the day.
The task
The recurring task
e.g. Washing and dressing
Which steps can go, move or shrink?
- A step that can go entirelyHair can air-dry; the towel can stay on the rail
- A step that can moveShower at night, when it doesn't collide with the morning
- A step that can shrinkBasin wash instead of shower on the heaviest days
- A step someone else could ownTowels and clothes brought within reach by whoever's up first
The floor version, written down
The version that keeps the task happening at all — not a failure version, the surviving one.
My floor version
e.g. Basin wash, hair under the tap, clothes already laid out, done sitting down
What 'decided in advance' means here
When I'll use it
e.g. Decided on waking: 'today is a basin-wash day' — one decision, made rested
Choosing the version when rested is one decision. Discovering it mid-task, when it's already too late, is a small crisis. The page is the difference.
