Stopping deliberation before it starts, wherever the decision doesn't warrant it.

Three quick questions before any deliberation starts. If a decision fails this filter, it doesn't deserve the thinking you were about to give it.

The decision I'm about to turn over

What it is

e.g. Which of the three appointment times to take

The three questions

  • Does this actually need me? — or could a default, a delegate or a 'not now' carry itYes / No
  • Could it be undone tomorrow, for less than deliberating costs today?Yes / No
  • Do I already have enough information for a good-enough answer?Yes / No

What would actually change the answer?

If the honest answer is 'nothing', you already have enough.

The fact that matters (if any)

e.g. Only whether I can get a lift that morning — so ask that, then decide

The verdict

It passes — worth real thought, and it gets itIt fails — ten seconds and a good-enough answerIt fails — delegated, dropped or deferred in one sentence

Most of the day's decisions are low-stakes, and treating them that way returns a surprising amount of capacity for the ones that genuinely need you.
