Hidden Demand Audit

Finding the uncounted costs — waiting, preparing, deciding, monitoring, processing — and what each could become instead.

A keep-close version. Read it here, or screenshot this page to have it on your phone — print and PDF copies will appear once final files are attached.

The most expensive parts of a day are often the ones nobody counts — including you. This checklist walks the costs that don't look like tasks, so they can be weighed honestly and, where possible, moved somewhere cheaper.

Waiting

Waiting is demand. It runs whether or not anything is happening.

  • A delivery window
  • A callback promised 'today'
  • A result I'm waiting on
  • Someone due to arrive

Preparing and rehearsing

  • Rehearsing what to say at an appointment
  • Choosing, packing, planning ahead of an event
  • Getting ready in a way that costs more than the thing

Deciding and monitoring

  • Decisions that keep re-opening instead of closing
  • Tracking my own symptoms against the plan all day
  • Holding the whole week's logistics in my head

Processing and aftermath

  • Digesting a hard conversation or appointment
  • The messages and admin that follow an event
  • Recovery that never quite gets its turn

One demand that wore a rest day's clothing

The day that felt easy but wasn't — worth naming once, kindly.

The disguised demand

e.g. 'Resting' before the appointment — which contained a shower, an outfit choice and a rehearsal

What could each one be moved into?

A written note — out of my head, onto paperA decided plan — closed, with a dateSomeone else's list — delegated outrightA smaller form — the cheaper versionNothing — some costs are simply real, and get respected

Hidden demand is not weakness or anxiety — it's real cognitive work that happens because life keeps asking questions of you. You cannot weigh a demand you haven't noticed.
