Personal Care With Very Limited Capacity
Use only what is manageable. You do not need to read this page all at once.
Very short version
Washing, dressing and toileting can happen in smaller pieces, with help, or not at all on some days. All of it counts.
A little more, if it is useful today:
- A strip wash at the bedside — face, hands, underarms — is a valid wash.
- Wipes, dry shampoo and a bowl of warm water can reduce the demand of a full shower or bath.
- A shower chair, sitting to wash, or help from another person can make washing possible on some days.
- Loose, soft clothing that fastens at the front takes less effort to put on. Dressing can be done in parts across the day.
- A commode, bedside pad or toileting aids can reduce trips. A district nurse or continence service can advise if this becomes an ongoing need.
- Personal care does not have to happen on a fixed routine, and it does not have to be managed independently.
